Artist Statement
Through research, meditation and making I explore the ways in which we connect to each other and the natural world through genetics, consciousness, and a shared history. My study of connection has revealed patterns of disconnection driven by human evolution and modern practices. It is my interest to provide a path for healing by bringing awareness to and encouraging conversation about these moments of connection and disconnection. What began as an honest effort to show similarities between Human races, has led to the realization that we, in fact, share similarities with all living beings. Shared biologic and geologic history, organic structure and genetic make up are proof of physical connection between human beings, plant beings, and animal beings. Through the collective unconscious we also know that there are spiritual and consciousness connections as well. Throughout history, many artists have sought to depict these spiritual connections and I work in this realm often. Recurring themes in my work reference micro-organisms to cosmos, vibration patterns to organic structure, root systems and the history that exists in the strata of the Earth. I am particularly interested in the way the Earth holds memory and feel there is an opportunity for healing that exists in both Human memory and Earth memory.
Experimentation has opened up new pathways for me to explore. Wire, fabrics, plaster, dyes, and many varieties of paper now have a place on my supply list along with paint, charcoal, and graphite. The books, essays, articles and poems that I read stir up visuals that sometimes make their way into my work. Meditation provides a source for clarity and vision as I feel my way through hours and days spent in my studio. In my meditation and in my making, I am seeking to connect that which has been disconnected and I believe the key to healing exists in memory.
