I usually work paintings and drawings simultaneously. The drawings are quiet, meditative and require focus. Mediums are limited to pastel, charcoal, and graphite. My movements are small, mostly from the hand and wrist.  After an hour or two, I am ready to move, so I redirect my energy towards painting. This involves a wider variety of mediums and larger gestures. Depending on the size of the painting, I may go from sitting on the floor to the top of a ladder many times in a session. In 2018, I began making my own surfaces because I wanted a surface that received both wet and dry mediums, and had an organic feel.   The paintings range in size from 12"x 12" to 124" x 60". Drawings are either 30" x 22", or 50" x 36".

Drawings

Except where indicated, these drawings are soft pastel, charcoal and graphite on Stonehenge paper. I set a single subject into a hushed and velvety environment to encourage quiet contemplation of the work.

Paintings

I press a mixture of plaster and acrylic mediums through and layer it on top of jute fiber to create a surface which receives both wet and dry mediums in a way that feels whole. The artwork highlights our relationship to the natural world.
